How can it be that there is such a big difference in the price of cashmere products?
Cashmere is not a mass-produced product, and there are so many different grades of cashmere quality; the fineness of the fibers and the cashmere purity of the manufactured product result in the price.

Why is cashmere so expensive in the first place?
Cashmere is the queen among wool types and has a particularly high price due to its special extraction. The cashmere wool is combed out from the hair of the cashmere goat. These cashmere goats live at an altitude of up to 5000 meters at up to 30 degrees below zero, mostly in the mountains of Mongolia or the Himalayas. The price of cashmere is determined by the length and purity of the fiber. A multi-stage sorting process is needed to really filter out only the longest and finest cashmere fibers that are to be used to produce the precious cashmere yarns. However, if this sorting process is terminated at an early stage, more fibers are used in terms of volume, but they are of lower quality than those subjected to further sorting processes.
As a layman, how do you know it's good cashmere?
Look at the price-, since the price of 1kg raw yarn of cashmere are usually over 100 USD (depending on the quality!), a pure cashmere sweater finished knitted & sewn with 300 grams of own weight can not be less than 100 EUR. You can do a small burn test and pluck some small fibers from the hem and light them - real cashmere burns badly and smells like burnt hair, while synthetic fibers burn quickly, smoky and in a bright flame.
Is a cashmere sweater from a fast fashion chain comparable to one from a pure cashmere brand?
It depends on what quality level of cashmere the fast fashion chain uses or if this is a pure cashmere sweater or mix.
Where are the differences?
Some fashion chains or cheaper labels like to play with the term "Recycle- Cashmere". A term that, especially in today's times, is valued by the end consumer as "eco-friendly", without the background knowledge on this. Unfortunately, in some cases this is not really recycled cashmere, i.e. from already finished cashmere sweaters, but also in many cases a waste product of cashmere production. These are the low-quality short fibers that fall off during the spinning of the yarn, are picked up and re-knitted.
Is it worth spending a little more money on a cashmere product? How durable are the high quality products?
It's definitely worth it if you buy it from a manufacturer that really focuses on quality, because that way you can make it a true favorite with lifetime value.
