DARK MODE

ANANI

ANANI is a multidisciplinary artist who receives most of her inspiration from her synesthesia. Autodidact she taught herself how to paint, illustrate, design, direct and write. Emerging from the world of dance, the field she worked in since the age of 10 - her visual work is strongly connected to movement and emotions. Therefore it carries deeper internal and external levels of the human understanding, which moves you to overthink your own perception over and over again.

"When I close my eyes, the back of my forehead becomes a display for constant moving imagery, as a reaction to what I hear. All sound is image to me.

So that frequencies enter my brain, my mind’s eye instantly establishes clear patterns, shapes, colours, faces, creatures and emotions.

Whereas when I paint, all these attributes merge into one and create a fluid constellation of diverse, visualised sound waves.

Therefore listening to music creates this absolute state of flow, in which I find myself translating tone onto canvas, brushing my soul onto the blank page.

Next to painting, I also practice other forms of expression, as dance, poetry, illustration and film to convert my visions into reality.

My whole being is consumed by the urge to create. Experiencing something coming to life through the freedom of imagination and the guidance of sound is the highest form of existence to me." - ANANI

THE THOUGHTS BEHIND THE ARTISTS WORK

1. Introduce yourself and your practice as an artist

My name is ANANI, I am multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin. Coming from the world of dance, I began to translate my perception of the world in colours and shapes 10 years ago.

2. What is your main inspiration, where does your art come from?

Most of my inspiration comes from my synesthesia, connecting sound and vision and the human mentality involving psychology and philosophy.

3. Where the idea of using your art on clothes came from? (upcycling & customising)

I grew up very close with my mother, who is a seamstress and photographer. She is my idol when it comes to creativity and caring for our natural environment. She upcycles every material, that finds its way into her hands. I believe, that fast fashion has died a long time ago and merging art and fashion is the best way to demonstrate that. Creating unique pieces, that carry a powerful message adds another dimension to clothing.

4. How does your art relate with the clothes you work with, you consider them part of the art piece or you see them as two separate things.

I consider Art wear as walking canvas.

5. What is the process behind every piece? Do you make the art in relation to the clothing you have to work with, or you adapt your designs into the piece?

Every creation has a different process. Usually I see a piece of clothing and it sparks an idea that turns into a design. Mostly I don't know before how the piece will turn out, since I create from a place of free flow. The piece creates itself and I am just the vessel using the tools to transform it into physical reality.

6. Share your thoughts on upcycling and how you enjoy the process.

Upcycling to me is to continue the unknown history of an object. Vintage fabrics mostly are of more value und quality and to modify and individualize this material is an honor to me. Reducing waste through this process gives me the opportunity to have a positive impact on the environment and I am very grateful.
